A fateful fight between two seamen

Tale from first engineer

We were anchored 20 nautical miles off the coast of Brazil, and had been waiting for over 14 days to dock. The wind blew hard all this time and it was hot and oppressive, like in a thunderstorm. The waves went high and the ship jerked annoying at the anchor. We had no information and the uncertain wait became painful. For several of the crew, it was time for there leave. They had worked on board for over 8 months - and longed for home and for their families. It was not possible to order a transport boat - too expensive.

It was in that stressed atmosphere it happened. Third engineer and a motorman were best friends, they joked and laughed a lot together. One evening, however, they unexpectedly began to quarrel. I don´t know about what. Later that night, they started fighting - and they fought like they vere insane.

The captain shouted at them to stop, but they continued fighting and ignored the order. Several men were needed to separate them, and they were locked up in their cabins. The next morning the captain called them to his office. Their faces were broken and they looked scared. They probably knew what was coming. The captain fired them directly - which of course was a disaster for both. They had large families to support.

Not obeying the captain's order is a very bad thing for a seafarer. They would probably be blacklisted and in the future have difficulty finding work as seafarers. A tragedy for the two seafarer out of something that never should have happened.
